Quotes are most often required when the customer is being reimbursed for the cost of their move by an employer or government office. Sometimes customers ask for quotes to ensure they do not exceed their budget.
Another common reason is that they do not trust the estimate given by movers. This is to be expected as some less reputable moving companies will give a low estimate over the phone just to get the job and then inflate the price on the day of the move. This can be avoided by making sure you choose a reputable moving company that you trust rather than choosing one just because it has the lowest rate.
For very small jobs, quotes often make sense as they are often lower than the hourly rate which generally incorporates a minimum number of hours and a charge for travel time. For most other jobs, provided you chose a reputable company, an hourly rate usually costs less than a quote.
Quotes are based on estimates, which are based on an hourly rate. However, unlike estimated prices, quoted prices can not vary unless the customer changes the scope of the work. When providing a quote, movers must take into consideration everything that could cause the move to take longer than expected. Therefore, quoted prices will generally be set at between 15% and 25% higher than estimated costs. |
